        MORNING SESSION.
                        AY 8, 1894.
  The constitutional convention of the
  State of New York met at the assem-
bly chamber, Albany, N. Y., May 8th,
1894, at 11 a. m.
  The Hon. John Palmer, secretary of
State, called the convention to order.
  The Rev. Walter W. Battershall, of
St. Peter's church, Albany, N. Y., offered
the following prayer:
   Oh, God, who 'has instituted Thy
throne in righteousness, vouchsafe your
presence in this assembly and give us
Thy guidance in its deliierations for
the enactment of just and equal laws,
which  hall preserve liberty and protect
virtue and build up the structure of
thk State upon strong aid enduring
fou. Jations. Preserve them frcm er-
ror.  .orance, prejudice and from evil
passion which darkens our souls and
is the hiding of Thy face. Grant in
strict wisdom and sound) judgment
that they may so Interpret that tne
law as constituted shall be Thy desire,
whose voice is the harmony of the
world, that they may promote peace
and good will; dissolve the bands of
strife and dissension; right the wrongs
of the injured and maintain the ca.use
of the innocent; punish the wrong doer,
but defend them that do well; that so
Thy righteousness may prevail 'n the
land, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ,
and the love of God, and s fellowship
of the Holy Ghost be wi  us all for-
ever. Amen.
  The Secretary of State-Gentlemen of
the convention. It becomes rny duty
under the statute to preside over the
preliminary organization r' this con-
vention 'Until you have ele a perma-
nent presiding officer. T( -oid call-
ing the roll twice, I will  r in the
members in groups of ten ..d, as your
names are called, you will -ent your-


selves at the table and after -.he roil
has been completed we shall be 'ble
to tell who are present and who are
absent. The deputy secretary of State
will commence the calling of the roll
beginning with the delegates-at-large.

  The  delegates  answered to their
names   and  the  constitutional oath
of office was administered by the sec-
