The system of academic degrees awarded by Polish
universities and other institutions of higher learning was intro-

duced in Poland by the Law of July 13, 1920. In arts and sciences
it recognized the lower degree, stopied nizazy (i.e., a master's
degree), and a higher degree, stopieA wyzsy (i.e., the degree of
doctor).
The master's degree was awarded to those who had cmpleted
at least eleven trimesters of study in the required subjects of the
field selected by the candidate after he had passed the oral and
written examinations and after he had submitted an approved master's
thesis covering at least two trimesters of work on a subject to be
assigned after the examinations. The thesis h*A to show the
candidate's ability to conduct scholarly research and a familiarity
with the current development in his chosen field.
The degree of doctor in arts and sciences was conferred on
the recipient of a master's degree, who had submitted, not earlier
than two years after having obtained a master's degree, a doctoral
dissertation which proved his ability to conduct advanced independent
