In the Republic of China, the Regulations Governing the

Control of Self-Defense Guns govern all guns used for the purpose
of self-defense by persons and legally constituted organisations and
groups? (Article 1). For the purpose of these regulations, self-
defense guns refers to two categories of guns: (a) all types of
pistols, rifles, cavalry guns, and homemade guns; (b) all types of
hunting guns which can be used for the purpose of self-defense. The
term guns is understood to include amnnition (Article 2).
In order to own a self-defense gun, one must obtain a
license from the police. According to the provisions of Article 19,
any gun for which a license has not been issued will be confiscated.
The application prooedure set forth in Article ( requires that the
applicant sutit the gun for inspection and that he have as guarantors
three families, two stores, or two persons who are government eaployees,
members of the military, or elected officials. After making a tho-
rough investigation of the applicant, the police will deny the appli-
cation if they find that the applicant bas a bad record or has com-
mitted crimes. In the case of denial of the application, the gun
and amnnition for which application was made are to be surrendered
