                                             Editorial

Consumer law in Europe is at a crossroads: With the implementation of the Consumer Rights
Directive a new standard has been set across the European Union. The harmonisation of laws has
now reached a level that brings the internal market closer to consumers and that enables businesses to
cross the borders from Sweden to Italy, from Portugal to Estonia, from Romania to Ireland.

If you consider that it was only in 1962 that John F. Kennedy introduced the concept of modern
consumer rights, this sounds like a history of success. However, there are challenges ahead. Before we
will turn to those questions, we have good news for you.

What you are holding right now in your hands - or reading on your monitor - is the launching
double issue of the Journal of European Consumer and Market Law, EuCML. The journal is not a
completely new, though. It builds on euvr, the bilingual journal on consumer and market law,
established in 2012. euvr had been inspired and founded by Stephan Keiler to whom we are deeply
indebted. The concept of EuCML largely follows the path we set with euvr: The journal contains
double blind peer-reviewed articles of highest quality and interesting shorter pieces in the section
'Comment & Analysis'. As before, we do not see consumer law in a consumer protection focused
way, but we interpret it always in the context of market order and doing business in Europe. We
understand the term consumer in a broad sense, encompassing, for instance, users and passengers. It
is our aim that EuCML is not only a necessary read for academics in the field. We also aim to provide
relevant information from all over Europe for practitioners in law firms, courts, undertakings,
associations and the authorities. Most notably in this regard, the new section called EuCML Reports
provides an overview of one current topic from the angle of different Member States. Additionally,
book reviews and notices keep you up-to-date on the latest developments in European consumer law.
The editors, a team of young European professors and researchers from several EU Member States,
and the esteemed experts in the Editorial Board of EuCML guarantee the high quality of the journal.

What is new? Three things stand out:

Most obvious is the change of language. EuCML is an English-only journal now. English has become
the language of choice for scholars and practitioners of European law. It is more and more vital to
understand what is done in other Member States. We see EuCML as a forum for the community of
consumer lawyers where you are informed about current affairs, discuss issues of a Union dimension
and read about the situation abroad.

Secondly, EuCML is now going to appear six times a year, starting with this double issue. This
enables us to be even more up to date and in touch with developments coming from European
institutions as well as from the Member States.
