JBC Membership Drive Closes Strong as Year Ends
Richaird i-1. Keatinge, Los An 'eles, California, National Chairnali of the
JBC Menbershi) Committee for 1949, announces that while tile voal set
at the beginning of 1949 was not reached, tile mem bershi p camipavign conducted
during the past twelve months may definitely be considered as successful. As
o6 October :11, 19)49, 1,i11 new applications for memhership in the American
Bar Assoeiation had been received thlrough the JR(1, of which 163 were re-

The state sending in the largest number of applications was New Yo'rk

period was Utah, with 59 per cent. As Mr. Keatinge points out, the best
relative performances were in tile smaller states, with special commendation
being due Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Utab

New York Bar Conducts
Job Opportunity Survey
More than seven thousand question-
naires, requesting data on incomes
and job opportunities, were distrib-
uted to the nmmhers of the New York
State Bar Association last month
through the joint efforts of the State
Bar and the New York City Section
of the Junior liar Conference.
The questionnaire is designed to ob-
tain comprehensive information con-
cerning the practice status of the
members of the New York Bar, fields
of specialization, incomes, legal ex-
penses, and average fees. Of partic-
ular interest to the Junior Bar are
questions which ask whether young
lawyers, apart from personal connec-
tions, could secure salaried legal em-
ployment in certain counties, and
whether they might be able to make a
living during their first two years in
private practice.
The survey is being conducted un-
der the direction of John Kirkland
Clark, New York, New York, chair-
man of the State Committee on Pro-
fessional Economics, assisted by Al-
bert Paul Blaustein, New York, New
York, chairman of the Survey Coln-
mittee of the Junior Bar Conference
in New York City. The Survey of the
Legal Profession has authorized and
approved the present study.
