E-mail address: geinfo@haworth.com] INTRODUCTION When the editor of Women & Criminal Justice, Donna Hale, asked me to write a biographical essay on Nicole Hahn Rafter I was, indeed, hon- ored. I distinctly remember my first exposure to Nicky's work: Too Dumb to Know Better: Cacogenic Family Studies and the Criminology of Women, which appeared in Criminology (1980c). 1 was struck by the substance, style, and sophistication of her work and suspected, after read- ing this' piece, that she had the potential to make some very important contributions to our field.1 But over the past fifteen years, she has more than exceeded my expectations by publishing two books, three edited Alexander W.
