Fairchild written by Susette Talarico. This is followed by Frances Heidensohn's first- person account of her experiences conducing research on gender in contemporary society. In A Feminist Critique of Self-Defense and Provocation in Battered Women's Cases in England and Wales, Wendy Chan discusses the significance of the battered woman syn- drome as expert evidence in the courtroom. From Australia, Kathy Laster presents a historical analysis of gender and the death penalty in her article Arbitrary Chivalry: Women and Capital Punishment in Victoria, Australia 1842-1967. The last manuscript by Renee Kasinsky compares the contemporary state's reaction to pregnant mothers who use drugs with the Progressive Era's response to mothers accused of child neglect. I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to both the members of the editorial board of Women & Criminal Justice and the outside reviewers who take the time to prepare thorough evaluations of all manuscripts submitted for publication consider- ation.
