                  From the Editor-in-Chief

Dear Friends,
As the new Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Police Crisis Negotiations,
I am delighted to begin my tenure with this special double issue devoted
to the police and persons with mental illness. Many of these articles are
ground-breaking and provide our audience with the most up-to-date police
practices and training programs. WhileJPCN will continue to accentuate crisis
negotiations and hostage incidents, we will also focus on many more typical
police-citizen encounters, such as interactions with persons experiencing
homelessness, suicidal ideation and behavior, and domestic violence. As
stated in the past, the major criterion for publication in JPCN is direct
application to the officers working the street.
Several new members of the editorial board have been added, including
some of the most well-respected authorities on police behavior, such as Dr.
Harvey Schlossberg, the former director of psychological services for the
New York City Police Department and author of Psychologist with a Gun,
and Dr. Vivian B. Lord, author of Suicide by Cop: Inducing Officers to Shoot.
I am also appreciative of the former board members who have agreed to
continue to serve. They include Dr. Wayman Mullins, Dr. Kris Mohandie,
Captain Frank Bolz, Dr. Richard Yentis, and Dr. Carl Gacono. Dr. Arthur
J. Lurigio, Professor and Associate Dean at Loyola University Chicago, has
consented to be my Consulting Editor. I shall rely on his vast knowledge
of policing practices and the human condition. Art will be an indispensable
asset to us all.
This issue would not have been possible without the work of two
indefatigable people, Dr. Arthur J. Lurigio and Dr. Amy C. Watson. In just a
few short months, Art and Amy culled together 17 original manuscripts from
around the nation and Canada. This was a truly extraordinary achievement!
I would also like to thank Dr. James Greenstone, founding editor of
JPCN and now Editor Emeritus. It was Jim's vision that made JPCN possible,
and I am convinced he will be deeply missed by many members of the
editorial board. I pledge to do my best to continue with his outstanding
work on behalf of the police community.
The success of JPCN is related to the willingness of our members to
become actively involved in the process of publishing the journal. I am
