                   More Approaches

        to Understanding School Violence

This edition of the Journal of School Violence illustrates more ap-
proaches for exploring and understanding school violence. The first
study by Sacco and Nakhaie, for example, examined data from the Ca-
nadian National Survey of Children and Youth to investigate hypothe-
ses regarding the relationships between students' social connections
and their feelings of vulnerability to criminal danger. Next, Chen devel-
oped a school safety and student achievement model, incorporating the
concepts of student background, school structure, school culture, school
disorder, and student academic achievement, and fit it to 613 elemen-
tary schools in New York City, using a Structural Equations Modeling
technique. Fung studied the parent-child parallel group Anger Coping
Training (ACT) program aimed to help reactively aggressive children
in restructuring cognitive characteristics, so as to reduce childhood ag-
gression. This research program involved experimental and control
groups with pre- and post-comparison. Qualitative data were collected
through 367 individual interviews (with children, parents and teachers),
focusing on the children's cognitive characteristics and aggressive be-
haviors at home, at school, and in classrooms. Griffin and his colleagues
evaluated a three-group school-based violence prevention program.
