Cyberviolence and the Schools

The Internet has provided a new medium for the victimization of
children, and sexual exploitation in cyberspace is among the most
dangerous threats to youth online. It encompasses a continuum of
perils to children, including on-line solicitation, bullying and
stalking. Traditional stranger-danger campaigns have been used
to develop safety guidelines; however, the interplay between iden-
tity, trust and deception in cyberspace creates a complex blending
of knowledge that is needed about online encounters and situa-
tions where children must exercise caution. (Berson, Berson, &
     Ferron, 2002)

This comment is taken from an article on cyberviolence published
jointly by Journal of School Violence (Volume 1, Number 2) and by the
online journal, Meridian: A Middle School Computer Technologies
Journal (Volume 5, Number 2) at the following Internet site:

This initial article prompted me to invite Ilene and Michael Berson,
University of South Florida, to assemble a series of articles on
cyberviolence that are featured in the current edition of Journal of
School Violence. We are indebted to the Bersons' for their scholarship
