     7he field of school crisis prevention and intervention, particu-
     lary in the area of violence, has made notable advances in the
     past decade. 7his introduction to the special issue of Journal of
     School Violence first reviews some of the advances in understand-
     ing violence within a prevention science framework. Second, the
     translation of this knowledge into action through developing inter-
     ventions and examining efficacy and effectiveness is discussed.
     7Third, issues relevant for implementing, disseminating, and mon-
     itoring interventions are reviewed. Finally, the articles in the
     special issue are introduced. Each of the articles, written 4Y experts
     from diverse fields, includes empirical findings using a variey
     of methodologies, implications for schools, and an outline of the
     direction for future research in the area.

Crises are, by definition, relatively unpredictable and unexpected events.
They are often associated with acute distress, presenting individuals with
problems that, at least initially, may not appear to have a solution. Crisis
