handle is hein.journals/wjsv1 and id is 1 raw text is: EDITORIAL More Simply Human than Otherwise Psychologist Harry Stack Sullivan (1947) wrote: In most general terms, we are all much more simply human than otherwise, be we happy and successful, contented and detached, miserable and mentally disor- dered, or whatever (p. 7). He believed that troubled humans often de- lude themselves into thinking that they are alienated-alone in the world-that they have problems and concerns unlike those of anyone. This construct, known as the delusion of uniqueness, seems to be at the root of school violence-where young people, often alienated from their peers, feeling unconnected with the school community and the world around them, resort to planning and implementing violent acts that win the attention and notoriety of their immediate worlds (and be- yond, through constant and thorough media coverage). This may seem to some an overly simple view of what causes school violence, and, in fact, it is only a small part of the picture. Scholars and practitioners have analyzed the causes of school violence, created and managed programs aimed at preventing violence, and have outlined so- phisticated interventions to cope with the devastation of school vio- lence when it occurs. The Journal of School Violence will become a center for this discussion, drawing from the best thinking around the world to discover new solutions to school violence and to use the Internet as creatively as possible to disseminate our discoveries.
