Flogging, drowning, decapitation, muti- lation and burning were suitable alternatives that succeeded in drawing what would today be the equivalent of the seven o'clock tv news audience that yields advertisers high returns of their invest- ments. Then our ABCs instruct us there was slavery. In the name of some divine principle echoed in the hallowed vaults of edifices de- voted to prayer, peace, love of humanity and civility we were taught that inferior people could be raised to our higher level of spiritual and material well-being by means of a prolonged period of unquestioning obedience and forced labor.
