Profil- ing is a conglomeration of physical, behavioral, and psychological com- ponents that increase the probability of apprehending a suspect. According to Withrow (2006), race was introduced into profiling in the 1980s to identify drug couriers. Since this time, race has become a staple in profiles used to identify criminals. Thus, the issue of racial profiling is important to understand because of the nature of racial component attached to profiling. In particular, few issues in criminal justice are more important than race and justice. A review of the empir- ical criminal justice literature reveals that race is a central issue all parts (e.g., policing, courts, and corrections). Understanding racial profiling will assist policymakers and criminal justice officials in developing proper methods to alleviate this derogatory practice. In the past, racial profiling has been published in separate venues. Thus, the literature on racial profiling has been disjointed. Therefore, this special edition on racial profiling has two main purposes. First, this spe- cial edition is designed to enlighten the field of criminal justice about ra- cial profiling by providing provocative articles that empirically examine this process. Second, this special edition provides information about ra- cial profiling from different perspectives. That is, most of the research on racial profiling occurs in policing excluding corrections.
