A number of forensic interviewing models, protocols, and adaptations of these models and protocols have been developed and employed in forensic interviewing. These models and protocols have been presented in work- shops and at conferences and have been publicized by their supporters. The contested issues and controversies have also been the subject of considerable media attention. In 2009, Kuehnle and Connell (2009) edited an extensive volume that described and discussed some of the contested issues and controversies in assessing and evaluating child sexual abuse allegations. Many of their chap- ters critiqued standard and commonly used techniques and approaches to interviewing children who may have been sexually abused, and the criteria for deciding whether they have indeed been sexually abused. The current special issue of the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse focuses on some of the controversies and contested issues, and also challenges some of the ideas advanced by some authors in the Kuehnle and Connell book. It should be noted that not all chapters or information in their book are being challenged, and many points are mutually agreed upon by their authors and the authors of the articles in this special issue. The goal of this special issue is to advance the science and methodology in the field of evaluating allegations of child sexual abuse, and to let readers become more knowledgeable about the controversies and contested differences in approaches and opinions related to sexual abuse allegations. In addition to this special issue, the subsequent two issues of the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse will include articles and responses by some authors of the Kuehnle and Connell edited volume commenting on and rebutting the articles in this special issue.
