6 Trends Org. Crime 1 (2000-2001)

handle is hein.journals/trndorgc6 and id is 1 raw text is: EDITOR'S NOTE Trends in Organized Crime, under the able editorship of Roy Godson for five years, has established an important niche among the current publications on organized crime. TOC's composite of analyses and syntheses from a variety of information sources has served well the interests of practitioners and policy makers as well as the academic community. My goal as the new editor is to build upon this solid foundation. This means extending and diversifying the content of the journal, adding some new features, and reaching to a broader, international readership. One of our first moves in this direction was to have Trends in Organized Crime become affiliated with the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime as that organization's official journal in 2001. IASOC is pres- ently renewing itself as the premier association of researchers and practitio- ners interested in the study of organized crime around the world. It is expected that IASOC will provide a critical mass of contributors, reviewers, and readers of TOC; and in turn, the journal will serve as a principal communications me- dium for the association. The President of IASOC will serve as an ex-officio member of the new TOC Editorial Board. A distinguished international editorial board has been created to assist in developing editorial policy for Trends in Organized Crime. The board mem- bers will be important sources of new content and ideas, as well as critical reviewers of journal submissions. No one person can see or know about every- thing being produced in this field. Thus the value of additional eyes and ears, and most importantly, minds. Organized crime has traditionally been an under-researched subject. This is so for a variety of reasons-among them the clandestine nature of the activity, the absence of official uniform data, the lack of academic respect accorded to those interested in the subject, a potential danger to researchers, and so on. As at least a partial remedy to this unfortunate situation, I will seek to have Trends become a stimulus and a forum for more rigorous empirical research, both nationally and internationally. During my stewardship of Trends in Organized Crime, I plan to move the content of the journal in the direction of including peer-reviewed, academi- cally rigorous research (See Notes for Contributors of Original Manuscripts). We will, at the same time, maintain a blend of content by continuing to excerpt significant governmental reports; by adding book reviews of major new books; 1
