Klnnan Golemon Ausfin, Texas It is a highlight of my legal career to assume the role as Chair for 1994- 95, of the Section of Natural Resources, Energy, and Environ- mental Law (SONREEL). I also rec- ognize that this honor by my peers brings with it the responsibility to listen to our members and to work closely with the Section's leadership to achieve improvements in the ser- vice provided to members. The theme of bridge building has been prominent under Frank Erisman's leadership. This year, we will be using this strong flexible metaphor to establish improved and new relationships within the Section and the legal profession, as well as with those in business, government, and public interest areas who are involved with natural resources development, energy production, and environmental protection issues. As we start the new ABA year, a reorganization of the Section's lead- ership and staff responsibilities has been accomplished (as more fully spelled out in the Organizational Chart on pages 8 and 9). These leadership and staff role changes are the outgrowth of efforts by past Chairs and Councils to ensure that we more efficiently and effectively utilize our resources - volunteer hours and limited staff resources - to maximize the benefits for those who annually remit their member- ship dues. Our service to grass roots mem- bers will be of prominent impor- tance this year. Building on last year's experience, the Section will expand the number of regional- based environmental programs. We additionally will address the possi- bility of sponsoring similar programs in other areas where it makes good sense to bring together all interested parties to discuss significant issues. One topic that we also will stress in 1994-95, and in future years, is our diversity. I consider diversity to extend well beyond our commit- ment to fulfill the extent of Goal IX (the advancement of opportunities for women and minorities to be involved in Section activities). We will ensure that our membership and our leadership are truly reflective of those within the profession, without respect to their employer or particu- lar point of view on any single issue. Considerable progress has been achieved. We take pride in this fact, but we make the commitment to accomplish more in future years. The work of the newly created Strategic Planning Committee also will be significant this year and in the future. This Committee will review the mission and long range needs of the Section and recom- mend programs and services to implement these goals. This Committee's efforts will ensure that SONREEL continues to service our members in innovative, timely, and cost-effective ways. In view of our rapid growth in recent years, one of my principal goals is to work collectively to enhance opportunities for participa- tion by those that wish to volunteer their time and energies for the bene- fit of SONREEL's members. I am encouraged by new membership involvement in the following areas: brown-bag lunches; regional-based programs; new and expanded publi- cation programs, including books, monographs, the new journal-The continued on page 15
