Editorial

We are pleased to announce the development and
expansion of the Journal ofMedia Law & Practice.
The journal was one of the first in this rapidly
growing field. It has now been fufilling the needs of
academics and practitioners alike for over six years,
providing much-needed serious commentary on
media law and practice.
In response to the growing needs of today's
practitioner the journal will now appear four times
a year and in a larger format providing more space
for detailed analysis of current developments. The
Journal ofMedia Law & Practice will continue to be
essential reading for all those involved in every
aspect of media and the law.
In the first part of his article on the judicial
process, contempt and the media, John Cooke
compares the restrictions imposed in England,
the USA and France in the context of the trial
processes in those countries. Donald Trelford,
editor of the Observer, comments on how a barely
perceptible accretion of case law and a hardening
of political and judicial attitudes towards the press
is constraining freedom of expression in the
United Kingdom. St John Robilliard reviews the
Law Commission's Report on criminal libel.
In keeping with our desire to provide an over-
view of developments in media law we reprint in full
the Cable Authority's code of practice on pro-
gramme sponsorship. This is supplemented by a
comprehensive news section, statutes, reports and
digests of all the important articles and periodicals
published in recent months.
