handle is hein.journals/taxmmo45 and id is 1 raw text is: AX MEMO No. 45 August, 1967 Ontario Taxation Committee Report The Report of the Ontario Taxation Committee (Smith Committee) was released today at Queen's Park at 1 p.m. Recommendations for reduced property taxes, a form of regional government, revamped succession duties and natural resource revenues are highlights of the Report. Complete imple- mentation of the Committee's proposals requires the Province to get greater tax room from the federal government. Failing that, increased income and sales tax, and a gift tax may be necessary. The three-volume Report contains over 350 recommendations. During its work the Committee received over 150 briefs and heard over 60 submissions at public hearings. The Committee worked for more than four years under the chairmanship of Lancelot J. Smith, F.C.A., a Toronto chartered accountant. Mr. Smith's fellow Commissioners were: Eric Hardy, consultant on government, of Toronto; Dr. R. Craig McIvor, professor of economics, of Hamilton: Carl A. Pollock, industrialist, of Kitchener; and R. Bredin Stapells, Q.C., of Toronto. All five Commissioners subscribed to the findings and recommendations of the Report without dissent.
