An American's Excellent Adventure in Toronto By Beatrice Tice Once upon a time (April 2004, to be exact), I received a completely unanticipated phone call from Carole Moore, Chief Librarian of the University of Toronto Libraries, inviting me to apply for the position of Chief Law Librarian at the UofT Faculty of Law. 'Would you be able to move to Canada?' she inquired. 'Sure thing,' I answered in standard American slang. And so began my excellent adventure in Toronto! A native of southern California, I came to the 'Big T.O.' by way of Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I spent three years as Foreign and Comparative Law Librarian at the University of Michigan Law School. I was responsible for the extensive Canadian law collection there, I often did Canadian legal research, and I regularly listened to CBC Radio 2. I speak fluent English and passable French, I was familiar with Canadian currency, and I'd experienced real winter while living in Ann Arbor. By August I had my temporary work permit and I'd leased a condominium at.Yonge and Bloor. So I was totally prepared to live in Toronto and direct a Canadian academic law library.. .right?
