              Useful Websites for Ontario Lawyers

                                    by Janine Miller

In January 1996, 1 wrote an article for The Lawyers Weekly entitled Stocking law library shelves in the electronic
age. I concluded by saying that libraries are going to be faced with the ever- increasing challenge of selecting
and balancing their purchases in a time of shrinking budgets, changing environments and non-traditional resources.
At that time, the quantity and quality of legal materials available through the Internet was still somewhat small.
It had little impact on the collection policies of libraries as there was no assurance of currency or breadth of
coverage. With the explosion of quality Web-based information, libraries are reviewing their collection
development policies in a new light. In a time of tight budgets and increasing costs for commercial publications,
librarians are making decisions based on obtaining information from alternate free sources. The rapid, continuous
and credible dissemination and exchange of useable information on the Internet will be an increasingly important
factor in maintaining our libraries, as we endeavour to leverage our resources.

This article will focus on four Internet-based resources that may be of assistance when rationalizing library
expenditures. I have selected these specific sites for two reasons. Firstly, they are ones with which I am particularly
familiar and, secondly, they provide or supplement information in your libraries, which might be of specific use
to Ontario lawyers. I am not including the Ontario e-Laws site as most members are familiar with the site, and
there are people far better qualified than I to describe its features.

The four sites chosen will be described progressing from the narrowest focus to the broadest. They are the Law
Society of Upper Canada, Great Library, BAR-eX and CanLI websites

The Law Society's Website (www.lsuc.on.ca)
The Law Society's public website is a key tool the organization uses, in conjunction with other electronic, print
and verbal media, to provide information to both members of the legal profession and the public. Launched in
1996, the interactive site is a valuable information source and service centre for lawyers to help them comply
