                           Part One: Introductory Comments

                           Steven Bender and Margaret Chon

                                TILE Faculty Co-Directors

At the launch of the TILE Program at Seattle University School of Law in October 2023, Gigi
Sohn, the Executive Director of the American Association of Public Broadband, shared her
absolutely inspiring journey through the wonky and critically important world of
telecommunications law. The policy (and personal) battles she has fought through her 30+ years
to ensure net neutrality and access to essential communications infrastructure set an incredible
example of how to follow ethics and justice principles when designing technology (including
legal systems) for human flourishing and equal opportunity for all people.

We are so grateful to all of those who were with us at the TILE program launch to hear Gigi's
remarks and to celebrate the birth of a program focused not just on training lawyers to practice
competently in technology and innovation-related fields, but also on making sure that our
graduates hold steady to ethics, values, and justice principles as technology is developed rapidly.
As it is being deployed, lawyers play a critical role to ensure that technology is applied for the
enhancement of social welfare, sustainability, and human well-being, consistent with the mission
of Seattle University with its abiding commitment to educating the whole person, to
professional formation, and to empowering leaders for a just and humane world in an
increasingly technologically challenging environment.

In this first year of our TILE program, our main priority is to acknowledge and celebrate our
amazing community, including the many remarkable alumni who have been at the forefront of
these important areas of law and policy, working for tech companies, in public service, in non-
profits, or in private practice. We aim to connect our accomplished alums with our talented
students. As Dean Varona mentioned in his remarks at the launch, we already have hundreds of
dedicated alumni who are working in TILE-related fields, whether in privacy, fintech regulation,
gaming, blockchain, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence-related areas, not to mention the
classic and traditional and very important areas of intellectual property prosecutions,
transactions, and litigation.
