EDITORIAL
This issue marks a 'hand-over' in the editorship of Res Publica, and is
the first of the journal's second decade. On behalf of a growing
readership, and the Association for Legal and Social Philosophy, we
would like to take this chance to register our very deep appreciation
of Bob Brecher's work as Editor. Getting a journal established is a
demanding business. That this one has gained the profile it has, and
ensured its place in a busy field of related periodicals, is in so small
measure down to the commitment, care and judiciousness with which
he and Liz Kingdom (as Deputy Editor) have nurtured it since 1995 -
alongside a dedicated editorial board. In an increasingly technocratic
academic environment, such commitment is especially salient. We are
very fortunate to receive charge of the journal from such capable
hands.
Volume 11 also marks a new chapter, and a chance to consider
where the journal has travelled since its inception. Our ambitions are
to push things further in existing directions, rather than make
wholesale changes. The spirit of the journal has always been to
encourage dialogue with the world beyond academic philosophy, as
well as within it. We will continue to encourage submissions that
connect rigorous, challenging ideas with issues of genuine social
concern. And we'll continue to invite work from researchers at the
beginning of their careers, and those working outside the Western
academic scene. A renewed objective is to publish more articles in
translation, and to build upon our existing European audience. But
as a well-established forum, the journal's prime aim remains the
publication of stimulating, significant, high-calibre international
scholarship in the fields of ethics, philosophy of law, and social and
political philosophy.
