In this article, the writers set out and comment the conditions ne- cessary for obtaining a change of sex designation in birth certificates, not only under Quebec law but also in other jurisdictions. After calling into question the relevance and usefulness of including sex designation in offi- cial documentation relating to a person's identity, the writers recommend a more flexible approach to a change of sex designation and suggest gender self-identification as a measure to be utilized.
