Political theory, like any healthy field (not ruined by agribusiness), is a
diverse ecosystem. A variety of plants coexist within it, competing for sun-
light or thriving in the shade. Some are dominant for a while and others
become more rare-as the climate changes and as seedlings from other fields
appear and cross-pollinate with native species. In the two and a half years
since I began the editorship of Political Theory, I, along with my editorial
assistants Derek Denman, Chad Shomura, and Zach Reyna (and before that
Katherine Goktepe), have worked to acknowledge this diversity and also to
give attention to some of the newer hybrids. In all cases, we tried to feature
specimens that are both interesting to examine and beautiful to look at.
In this pursuit, we have relied upon a small army of reviewers who have
taken the time to respond with care and productive criticism to the work of
their peers, and upon our Executive Editorial Committee-Roxanne Euben,
Rogers Smith, Anne Norton, Danielle Allen, Rainer Forst, Achille Mbembe,
and Anne Phillips-who also have my sincere gratitude. I continue to rely
also on the good judgment of Aletta Norval as Consulting Editor, and upon
David Owen and his astute choice of books and their reviewers. Special
thanks go to Anne Phillips, a valued member of the EEC, who is now rotating
off. And a warm welcome to Paul Apostolidis from Whitman College who
has just joined us and has already become invaluable as an insightful, fair,
and careful reviewer of manuscripts.
I am also pleased to announce that this year will see the first enactment of
David Owen's idea to create virtual issues of the journal. These guest-
edited volumes will make use of the rich archive of essays already published
in the journal over its forty-year history: each of these issues will assemble
four or five articles that revive a theme or thinker important in the past but
now neglected, or it will creatively juxtapose essays from the past to address
a debate or topic of importance today (but unimagined then), or it will pro-
vide a teaching tool, along the lines of a best of on a topic or thinker. I look
forward to the first of these, curated by Lars Toender, on Political Theory
and the Sensorium.
With best wishes for the New Year,
