T HE EXECUTIVE COMMI'TEE MET at the annual meeting of the
American Political Science Association. They voted to ask me to continue as
editor for another three-year term. I have gladly accepted. Alan Houston and
George Kateb have agreed to continue on. Their advice has been invaluable;
I know they will continue to give it to me. Peter Euben will continue as book
review editor. He has moved with zest and intelligence in to what can be a
thankless job.
Every year also sees the replacement of one member of the executive
committee. This year Richard Ashcraft departs. We have all benefited from
his contributions to the journal. The executive committee has asked Stephen
K. White to replace him. I am pleased to announce that he has accepted and
will begin his six-year term in February 1995. White's work on postmod-
ernism, Habermas, and continental philosophy requires no introduction to
our readers. His Edmund Burke: Modernity, Politics, Aesthetics has just
appeared from Sage in the Modernity and Political Thought series, edited by
Morton Schoolman.
Each year one of the editorial assistants rotates off and a new one comes
on the board. This year Christopher Dugan leaves us; I shall miss his incisive
intelligence and knowledge. He is writing a dissertation in classical political
theory. We welcome Hans von Rautenfeld who comes to UCSD from the
University of Virginia.
Peter Euben and I have discussed the book review situation over the last
year. The book review editor receives hundreds of books a year, of which we
can review but a small fraction. He or she is caught between important first
books that need to be reviewed, books by major figures that should be
reviewed, and the necessity of covering the spectrum that makes up political
theory. We have decided when possible to combine books together in some-
what longer collective reviews.
A number of new journals of particular interest to our readers have
appeared in recent years. The Journal of Political Philosophy, edited by
Chandran Kukathas and Robert Goodin publishes on a wide range of topics.
Seeking to fill the space left by the demise of Praxis International, there has
appeared Constellations: An International Journal of Critical and Demo-
cratic Theory, which aims at fostering a dialogue with other critical dis-
