BEHM, MARGARET BRENT HONOREE, 1992 After today, the ABA will never be the same. GEORGE E. BUSHNELL, JR., ABA COMMISSION ON WOMEN IN THE PROFESSION MEMBER AND ABA PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE It was an afternoon of validation, visibility, tears, cheers and ovations for keynote speaker and immediate past Chair of the Commission on Women in the Profession, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and for Margaret Brent Award honoree Professor Anita F. Hill (Special Award) and the five other honorees, each of whom accepted her award with eloquence and exceptional remarks in her own personal style. There was a sense in the room that we were celebrating what women have done and what we are about to do, remarked Patsy Engelhard, Associate Director of the Commission. Feminist Legal Theory THE CONVERGENCE OF THEORY AND PRACTICE by Rebecca J. Westerfield Everyone has heard of Abigail Adams' plea to John to remember the ladies in found- ing the United States. However, we seldom hear of his response: We know better than to repeal our masculine systems. And they didn't. It is a simple historical fact that our legal system was socially constructed with- out the participation of women and without the recognition of the unique elements of women's lives and experiences. The bur- geoning body of feminist legal theory at- tempts to answer the profound and com- plex question of just what difference the inclusion of women's issues, ethical values and experiences is having or should have on the administration of justice. Recently, the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession co-sponsoredwith The Chicago Bar Association's Alliance for Women a program on legal concepts and values entitled Is the Law Male? The conference brought together practitioners, judges and academicians to consider how to work together to open the legal system to feminist legal theory. It is entirely fitting that the Commission, having struggled so assiduously for the inclusion of women in the profession, now begins to examine what impact the female perspective has on sub- stantive and procedural law.
