I FALL 1991 A NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF WOMEN LAWYERS: First Annual Margaret Brent Awards A Success I's time to start honoring and celebrating the accomplishments of women lawyers on a national scale. From this challenge by Hillary Rodham Clinton, chair of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, the first annual Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Awards evolved into an inspirational event at the ABA An- nual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia on August ii, 1991. The Commission honored five women lawyers, and Geraldine Ferraro spoke before a capacity audience of over 350 V, people.in ? 4 The five honorees were selected by the Commission from 250 nominations. Each honoree achieved professional excellence in her area of specialty and paved the way to MOVING, INSPIRATIONAL: The Margaret Brent Women Lawvers of Achievement Awards success for other women lawyers. THE FIRST IN MINNESOTA: Women a Majority on Supreme Court WHEN Sandra Gardebring was swom in as an Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, she became the fourth female justice on the seven member court. As a result, Minnesota became the first state ever with a female majority on its highest court. In January 1991, Justice Gardebring joined Justice Rosalie Wahl, Justice M. Jeanne Coyne and Justice Esther Tomljanovich. Although many are herald- ing this female majority as the harbinger of a new age of feminist jurisprudence, the question remains, what effect will the female majority have? According to Justice Rosalie Wahl, ap- pointed in 1977 as the first woman on the Minnesota Supreme Court and one of the recipients of the American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession's first annual Margaret Brent Awards (see above), the most meaningful aspect of this female majority is its symbolic significance for women. She believes that this majority has already given many women a sense of empowerment. According to Justice Wahl, Just the fact that this majority exists is empowering.
