Section of Public Contract Law, American Bar Association Volume 20, Number 1, Fall 1984

QUARTER was not offered Ac
nor asked at the Alamo.
Finally, on March 6,
1836, the ten-day agony
ended. David Crockett
and 180 other free spirits
of the west had perished
in what to them at the end
must have seemed a de-
serted and futile cause. It
was not.
  Their bravery united
those who had bickered
while the Alamo fell. San-
ta Anna was defeated and
captured within two
months. Sam Houston
became president of the
Republic of Texas before
the end of the year. Texas
was annexed to the
United States within a
decade. Had there been
no Alamo, would Texas
be one of the 50? Would The Alamo is the old chap
we have savored the Valero. founded In 1718 by
special verve and spice which have been provided by
the Lone Star State?
Near the Alamo, and adjacent to headwaters of
the San Antonio River and some great military
bases, the ABA's Section of Public Contract Law
soon will be gathering. An all-day program will
review the new Competition in Contracting Act at

      the Hyatt Regency Hotel
                      on Friday, November 16,
1984. The Act is of great
                      philosophical and practi-
                      cal portent, having regis-
tered at least eight on the
                      Richter Scale. Timely ex-
                      planations and discussions
                      will be presented by
                    , knowledgeable panelists.
                    e On Saturday, Novem-
ber 17, 1984, the Council of
                      the Section will consider in
                    I open session current issues
of first concern to the pro-
                    , curement bar. Everyone is

f Mission San Antonio do The Alamo (cotton-
Franciscan order. wood in Spanish) is only a

humble and unpretentious chapel. Its inspiration
comes from the heart. The Alamo is a monument to
the extraordinary spirit and bravery which won the
west. Thirty-two volunteers under Gonzales slipped
through the Mexican lines to join colleagues defend-
ing the Alamo. There is pathos and beauty in that
great sacrifice.
