There were 56 official participants including 22 international guests (representing 17 countries), 22 U.S. scholars who traveled in, and 12 EKU faculty and staff (several EKU students also participated as well as a mem- ber of the South Australia police who happened to be visiting EKU on a Churchill Fellowship). One principal reason for the conference was to bring together a signifi- cant number of police scholars and educators for the express purpose of tak- ing stock of the field/discipline of police studies to address some fundamen- tal questions: * What is the field of police studies? * What is its purpose? * What does it look like in different countries? * What are some key contemporary issues? * Where are the knowledge gaps in the field? * How can those engaged in police studies collaborate better? The conference was constructed of seven sessions and 18 presentations over 22 days. Three sessions focused on the past, present, and future of the field of police studies. The other four targeted more specific issues-tech- nology, diversity, globalization, and community policing.
