Editor's Introduction to the Special Issue
Since the advent of the Risk-Need-Responsivity Model (Andrews & Bonta, 1996, 2010), the
terms dynamic risk factor and risk prediction have become well-established concepts that
guide correctional policy. Astoundingly, however, these concepts appear to have shaped
worldwide assessment and treatment practices in the absence of significant constructive cri-
tique. Yet rigorous appraisal of these and associated concepts is critical for establishing
'what works' with individuals who offend.
In this special issue, Tony Ward and Clare-Ann Fortune have gathered together and edited a
collection of manuscripts all dedicated to the topic of dynamic risk factors. Ahead of you lies a
wonderfully diverse, theoretically astute, constructively critical, and multidisciplinary special
issue. There is no doubt in my mind that the concept of dynamic risk factors and associated
concepts are about to undergo a huge re-conceptualisation as a result of this extraordinary
special issue. I anticipate that it will be used by academics, policy makers, and practitioners
to constructively question current practice and design research that will lead to very meaning-
ful gains in a wide variety of offender intervention efforts.
I want to thank Tony and Clare-Ann very sincerely for their hard work on this special issue.
Editing a special issue of this magnitude, which such an excellent line up of international
authors is no mean feat.
