However, that first edition was probably at least three years in the planning and it is appropriate to pause and ask How did it all start? Looking back, it was clear that the 1990s was to be a period of growth in the general area of psychology and crime. The signs were there to see in, for example, the rapid expansion of psychological services in prison and probation systems; the increasing use of psychologists as expert witnesses in a wide range of court cases; the impact of psychological techniques in criminal investigations; and the expanding number and range of university courses, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, in which there were overlaps between psychology, criminology, and law. The extension of psychological practice to matters criminal and legal was paralleled by a renewed emphasis on research with increased funding opportunities, new learned societies being formed, and more academic and professional conferences. It is a fact that as research increases so the demands of researchers for more publishing outlets increase accordingly. The idea for a new journal to meet this fresh demand came from the original publishers, Harwood Academic Publishers. After a series of telephone calls the first meetings of the publishers and potential editors took place in London and Cambridge in 1991. The working title of the planned journal was Psychology and Law, although that was obviously changed as the plans progressed. The publisher's soundings of the academic community were positive: for example, a letter to the publisher from a distinguished researcher, dated 11 September 1991, said There is a great deal of good psychology and law research around and too few publication outlets. At some forgotten meeting, with the papers perhaps now archived in the publishers' vaults, the decision was made to launch the journal. At the first business meeting the publishers were represented by Mark Simon and Fiona Cairns, with founding editors from the UK (Clive Hollin) and The Netherlands (Peter van Koppen). The tasks at that first meeting were to find a third editor based in the USA, to put together an Editorial Board, and to plan what type of content we would wish to publish. A telephone call persuaded Allan Lind from The American Bar Foundation to join as the third editor. Grandly, we divided the academic world into three: North and South America belonged to Allan Lind, Europe and Asia fell to Peter van Koppen, and the Rest of the World was given to Clive Hollin. Unfortunately, having done all the ground work, Allan Lind was unable to continue with us beyond the first edition, and Steven Penrod took up the American editorial responsibilities from 1(2). A long list of names was drawn up for the Editorial Board, eventually edited down to a short list, and the invitations sent out. Finally, we faced the issue of what would be published in Psychology, Crime, & Law?
