ABA Annual Meeting in London:
A Government Lawyer's View of Legal London
By Sheryl G. Wood

A s most of you know, the ABA 2000 An-
nual Meeting was held in New York
and London in July. Since the Division did
not meet in London, I had to make the deci-
sion of whether or not to attend. Not exactly
a tough dilemma! While the registration fee
was high and London is certainly expensive,
I have to say it was one of the best confer-
ences I have ever attended. (Not that the
meetings in New York this year were any-
thing but top-notch.) The ABA theme for
London, Common Law Common Bond, held
very true and was very special for me.
While you cannot top hearing Tony Blair
speak at what was a very beautiful and sig-
nificant opening ceremony, I would have to

say the highlight of my trip was meeting
with two government solicitors, Christopher
Robinson and Nigel Roberts. It is absolutely
amazing when government lawyers get to-
gether, even from across the Atlantic, to dis-
cover how much we all have in common.
Even with that much physical distance be-
tween us, we share some of the same client
concerns, fiscal problems, and legislative is-
sues. I spent a very enjoyable afternoon with
them at the Law Society on Chancery Lane
discussing topics of mutual interest. Many
thanks to the Director of our Division, Susan
Kidd, for making the transatlantic introduc-
tions. I'm sure the relationships developed
will continue.

I was able to take advantage of some of
the marvelous programs the ABA offered
during this event. It makes a big difference,
traveling with the ABA, for entrances and
special perks for the members. We were
provided a special overview by a member
of the bench at the Royal Courts of Justice.
We then were taken to different court-
rooms to view selected proceedings. Hav-
ing chosen to go with the group for public
and administrative matters, we viewed the
hearing of Mohamed al Fayed vs. the
Royal Coroner. At this particular hearing,
Mr. Fayed was challenging the Royal Coro-
ner's jurisdiction of the inquest into the

Annual Meeting Highlights of New York

L yrics have been extolling the virtues of
New York forever: New York, New
York, it's a wonderful town; if you can
make it here, you'll make it anywhere. But
if you missed the ABA Annual Meeting in
New York, fugetaboutit. Lucky for you,
we'll recap the Division events:
Engrossed in Ethics
The Division presented yet another suc-
cessful run of its highly acclaimed CLE
program, Ethical Considerations in Public
Sector Law, on July 7. The panel was mod-
erated by Justice Betty Weinberg El-
lerin, Justice of the Supreme Court, Ap-
pellate Division, First Judicial Department,
New York. Panelists included past Divi-
sion Chair John J. Copelan, Jr., Shutts
and Bowen, LLP, Fort Lauderdale, Florida;
Allen Giles, General Counsel, Minneapo-

lis Public Schools; Sharon Pandak,
County Attorney, Prince William County,
Virginia; Michael S. Ross, Partner at
LaRossa and Ross, former Assistant Dis-
trict Attorney, Kings County, New York;
and Deborah A. Scalise, Deputy Attor-
ney General, Westchester Region, New
York. Special thanks to Sharon Pandak
who, as Chair of the CLE Committee, also
organized the program.
The Division jointly sponsored The
21st Century Lawyer: Problem Solver or
Case Processor? The Honorable Richard
Posner led the session with a discussion of
mediation and the problem-solving attor-
ney in civil cases. The panel brought to-
gether some of the country's leading prac-
titioners and legal observers of the new
community-oriented approach to lawyer-
