Section of Judicial Administration

       American Bar Association

Vol. 3, No. 1I

MESSAGE FROM
THE CHAIRMAN

The Annual Meeting is upon us once again and I
extend to each of you a most cordial invitation to attend.
The schedule of events for the Section is a full one, and
I feel certain that you will benefit greatly if you will but
take advantage of the opportunity to participate.
The Section's Law and Laymen program for the
meeting promises to be an excellent one. The moderator
of the panel will be Lawrence E. Spivak of NBC's
Meet the Press, and the panelists will include, among
many other noteworthy personages, Mrs. Perle Mesta,
former Minister Plenipotentiary to Luxembourg, and
Ratymond Burr of the Perry Mason television series.
    Another interesting-and controversial-program to
be presented by the Section at the meeting is the
Demonstration of Modern Theories of Procedure
which will be put on in the Ceremonial Court Room of
the United States Court House. This show has already
been on the road and has proved itself ready for the
big time in Washington. It was presented at the Regional
Meeting in Portland where it stirred up a great deal of
controversy and caused some heated discussion con-
cerning the principles advanced in the course of the
demonstration. I think you will also find the format of
the program slightly different and more than a little
entertaining.
Our Annual Dinner in honor of the judiciary is
always the high point of Section activity at the annual
meeting. The speaker will be one of our distinguished
English visitors, The Right Honorable Lord Evershed,
Master of the Rolls, London, England. The luncheon
at this year's meeting is to be held jointly with the
Section of International and Comparative Law and the
Junior Bar Conference. Another of our English guests
will be the speaker at the luncheon. He is The Right
Honorable Lord Justice Pearce, Judge of the Court of
Appeal, London, England. His topic will be Our
Common Problems in the Common Law.
The program in rull is set forth in another part of
this Bulletin.
The Section was handicapped this year because of
the untimely passing of Judge James Alger Fee who was
to have been Chairman of the Section. Although I was
ill-prepared to fill his shoes, it has been possible for me
to carry on with the able assistance of our Administrative
Assistant, Ben MacKinnon.

Stephen Chandler, Chairman, 1959-60 Chief Judge. United States
District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma.

The Section has this year done much toward the
promotion of the administration of justice. We have
distributed materials; participated in and presented pro-
grams; have started, continued and finished various
projects; all of these things with the view of bringing
the legal profession out of the Dark Ages so that it
can and will keep pace with modern times. Our task is
not a small one, but tangible results of our work do
appear from time to time and serve to encourage
further effort.
I know that the Section will render even greater
service to the legal profession next year under the
competent guidance of Judge McCoy.
I will see you in Washington.
                      STEPHEN CHANDLER, Chairman
