handle is hein.journals/npvolsq9 and id is 1 raw text is: EDITOR'S COMMENTS It has now been four years since the Journal of Voluntary Action Research, that labor of love of a small group of dedicated folk from so many disciplinary back- grounds, has been issued on time or in its promised quarterly form. Once a journal gets behind, it is mighty difficult to catch up, despite the best of intentions. Now comes Volume 9, not in the accustomed double issue, but in the format of a single issue for the entire year. Please, dear reader, do not despair, but rather celebrate with us that this step allows us to return to our intended schedule of delivery. Volume 10 will be published quarterly, and all four issues will be in the mail by the end of each quarter of the year. Volume 9 presents a richness of papers, and I am particularly pleased that a substantial number of them were presented at the First World Congress on Voluntary Action Research, as held in Brussels in June, 1980 under the sponsorship of the International Voluntary Action and Voluntary Association Research Organization (IVAR/VOIR). Through the good offices of its able Secretary-General, David Horton Smith, JVAR submissions were presented by over twenty-five confer- ence participants, and nine papers are presented in this issue. Many other conference papers are slated for publication in book form, and readers of this column will be informed of progress in the development of that project in a future issue. I am pleased to acknowledge the cooperation of the International Voluntary Action and Voluntary Association Research Organization in presenting the Brussels papers in this issue. The authors of the papers are Uzzell, Sills, Vernon, Caulkins, Zeldin, Berg-Schlosser, Hegland, Abma, and Choe. Some of these authors have published before in these pages. To them, welcome back! And to our new authors from several corners of the globe, a hearty welcome to the Journal of Voluntary Action Research! May this not be the last time we work with you. Last issue failed to acknowledge the valuable efforts of Jack Ross of the Memorial University of Newfoundland in translating Albert Meister's lead article, Personal and Social Factors of Social Participation. That oversight is remedied by this announcement. Jack Ross' committment to international voluntary action research, and his yeoman service in that cause, is further underwritten by his review in this issue. Finally, a policy issue. Several readers of the Journal have expressed to me their hope that the Journal will focus more centrally on American material than international in the years ahead, and pay increased attention to issues of volunteer service deliver This editor recognizes that about forty percent of the Journal has been devoted by his predecessors to international contributions, and invites input from the readership re- garding any change in that proportion. I would add that the historic balance seems appropriate to me, but input from readership is what opens an editor's eyes to new conceptions of appropriateness. As for a focus on volunteer service, I would welcome articles on the topic, and re- cognize that it has received less than its due in the submissions received by this Journal. Readers are encouraged to propose special issues topics in this area, and to submit their own pertinent research.
