My com- ments reinforce those offered in the last issue: AVAS is a lively and productive scholarly organization; participation in its conferences gives members an opportunity to share their work with colleagues and to present it through the medium of NVSQ; readers of this quarterly are invited to join AVAS, a dedicated and growing band of researchers. The papers in this issue were presented at AVAS's 1988 conference. Many people worked hard to make that conference a success. The contri- butions of Delwyn Dyer, then AVAS president, and Milton Boyce, the conference chair, were particularly noteworthy. After the conference, Kenneth Perkins accepted the charge of the AVAS board to edit the conference issue. He was joined by Thomasina Borkman and Richard Sundeen. The work of this committee is represented in the excellence of the present issue. Perkins and his committee reviewed thirty-four papers presented at the AVAS conference and identified six as prospects for publication in NVSQ. Five of these papers are presented in the current issue. The sixth will appear in a forthcoming issue. I am particularly grateful to Ken Perkins and the committee for their diligent efforts. We have now reached the point where every paper pre- sented at the AVAS conference is reviewed, its author willing, for possible publication in the conference issue. Many papers not selected for the conference issue are revised, in light of the comments provided to their authors, for regular submission to this quarterly. This double opportunity to advance toward publication in these pages is just one reward of active participation in AVAS. All readers of NVSQ are most cordially invited to join the association.
