handle is hein.journals/npvolsq18 and id is 1 raw text is: EDITOR S NOTES THE RENAMING of a journal is always a time of hope and anticipation, and the relaunching of the Journal of Voluntary Action Research as the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly is no exception. JVAR has served the fields of voluntarism and citizen participation for seventeen years, and it has begun to make its mark in the areas of philanthropy and nonprofit organization as well. But, as the years have passed, it has become clear that this journal must move beyond the limits of its original title if it is to serve the research needs of the broad third sector. Thus, the journal's new name is a clear signal that it is committed to presenting basic and applied research on voluntarism, citizen participa- tion, philanthropy, and nonprofit organization-organized as a social- political-economic form that we have come to know simply as the sector, whether we characterize it as third, voluntary, or nonprofit. The board of the Association of Voluntary Action Scholars, after consulting with lead- ers in the sector, has chosen a new name that, we believe, will make this commitment clear. While the new name remains true to the original vision of JVAR, it extends it by suggesting how a number of scholarly interests are now coalescing into an important field of research and discourse. In its structure and editorial policy, the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly will be only incrementally different from JVAR. NVSQ's deputy editors will be more actively involved in both editorial policy and the solic- itation of contributed work. Most issues will include a Commentary section. To the extent possible, articles will be grouped by the major sub- fields of interest to readers of NVSQ, which continue to be voluntarism, citizen participation, philanthropy, and nonprofit organization. The papers in this first issue of NVSQ were all submitted separately to the IVAR. Each paper focuses on an important aspect of the changing shape of nonprofit and voluntary organization.
