While its members meet only intermittently, and never close every circle by face-to-face meetings, they nonetheless share interests and concerns that join them in those common ties. This issue welcomes to the JVAR community a number of new Deputy and Con- sulting Editors. All have been friends of JVAR, as well as leaders in the developing scholarly fields of nonprofit organization management, philanthropic studies, citizen participation studies, and voluntary action research. Several represent the major centers in sectoral research that have developed in recent years at such major univer- sities as those of the City University of New York, Duke, Indiana, Johns Hopkins, the London School of Economics, Tufts, Virginia, and Yale. I am pleased that the new JVAR leadership team has pledged to play an active role in the location and presentation of timely articles in JVAR, and I look forward to working with them, beginning with a meeting of Deputy Editors in San Francisco in March. I would also like to express my deep appreciation to Jim Petersen, who moves from the Deputy Editorship he has held since Volume 6 to the ranks of Consulting Editors, and to Chris Pickvance, who has served with equal distinction for a shorter term, and makes the same move as Jim. Virginia Parkum, for the past several years an Associate Editor, also becomes with this issue a Consulting Editor. Her service to the Journal has been steady and strong, culminating in her editorship of the fine Con- ference Issue that was the last issue of 1987. Cycling off the list of Consulting Editors are several who have served JVAR long and well: Mal Walker to retirement; David Zeldin after years of service as a Deputy and Consulting Editor; and Bob Leduc, Susan Ellis, and Betty Wilson to their respec- tive roles with leading sector-serving organizations. My thanks to each of these distinguished individuals for their service to JVAR. Virginia Hodgkinson, that dynamo for research organization, vision, and practice, moves to a Consulting Editorship. And joining those ranks also is Stephen Block. Welcome to both these individuals! The current issue presents the long-awaited contributions Ann Abbott brings to us on homelessness and the voluntary response. Of all the problems that vex our contemporary society, few are more troubling than the forces that lead so many of our fellow citizens to seek shelter beneath our bridges and on the heating vents of our cities' corners. The ,papers in this issue shed much light on this important problem-one that is truly a collective responsibility for all of us to both understand and resolve. Jon Van Til
