handle is hein.journals/npvolsq11 and id is 1 raw text is: EDITOR'S COMMENTS The beginning of a second decade is always a time for reflection and good cheer, and so it is as JVAR enters its eleventh year. I am particularly pleased to present this special issue as we begin Volume 11, because it is timely, pro- vocative, and draws on the work of an intelligent and distinguished set of authors. I am particularly grateful for the efforts of long-time Deputy JVA Editor, and AVAS President-elect, Jim Petersen, for putting this excellent collection together. I am also thankful for the help and assistance provided by the Center for Social Research and the Department of Sociology at Western Michigan University in providing camera-ready copy for this issue. Sharp-eyed JVAR readers will note the absence of the accustomed list of Associate Editors from this edition. Growth means changes in relationship, and for JVAR it means that the time has come to discharge our distinguished panel of Associate Editors, with thanks and good wishes. This panel has served JVAR well in its first decade. Names and energies have been lent to the new journal that were important to its development. But the panel is ungainly in its size, and now reflects too wide a range of commitments to the Journal to be either helpful or appropriate to maintain. All JVAR readers owe their thanks to each and every one of these colleagues, whose collective contribution is reflected in the Journal's very existence. The AVAS Board has concurred with the Editor's recommendation that a panel of Consulting Editors be appointed, consisting of some twenty active JVAR readers who are also supportive AVAS members. Nominations are being received by the Editor, and readers are urged to volunteer for these positions as well as identifying those who might usefully serve. All those on our former board of Associate Editors are cordially invited to consider service as Consulting Editors. Review tasks will be more regular than previously, as will involve- ment in editorial policy. Later this year, Volume 11, No. 4,will also contain a ten-year index of JVAR. This index will be updated at the end of each yearly volume with a yearly index. I hope that this service will prove a useful addition to JVAR readers. On to our second decade'. Jon Van Til Editor
