This interest has been illus- trated not only through the rhet- oric of our public policy officials but through concrete legislative change, the development of new programs, and individual demand for greater knowledge and im- proved skills. While much has been accomplished, there is much to be done. Thanks to a new grant from the Office of Justice Programhs, U.S. Department of Justice (OJP) NOVA will be expanding its services for at least another year. This continued funding from the Department of Justice seems a steady indicator of the support of this Administration and this country for victims of crime, announced NOVA's Exec- utive Director Marlene Young in response to the grant award. Highlights of the new grant activi- ties are primarily four-fold: * expansion of NOVA's state net- working efforts; * the development of a pilot train- ing curricula for existing victim service providers and a curricula for inter-disciplinary training for criminal justice professionals; In This Issue: * PROFILES: 1984 Award Winners .......,...... 3 * ABA Young Lawyers Form Crime Victim Services Committee .......... 3 * Conference Update..... 5 * to assist programs in implemen- ting the management informa- tion systems and cost-benefit in- struments developed over the last year and to begin a pilot assessment program for moni- toring the quality of existing vic- tim service programs; and * to maintain information and referral services for the victim assistance field as a support function to the National Victim Resource Center. State Networks/Public Education In the last two years NOVA has assisted in establishing networks of victim services in all fifty states. The success of this project is largely due to the state network contacts 'who recognize that the initiative and leadership for the networking effort must come from within the state. NOVA staff member Kathy Adams-House remarked, It was exciting for me to work with the enthusiastic and committed people who are providing services to vic- tims across this country. The net- working efforts enabled states to better know what they already have and to focus on what areas they want to improve. In the next year Kathy will be providing technical assistance to individual states to ensure the growth of new networks and to help the older networks to expand their activities into skills develop- ment areas and public policy ini- tiaives.
