        The 21st Century COE  Program  The Law  and Policy of Intellectual Property: Building a New Global
Framework  is a research project that lasted for 5 years until March 2008. This article is an attempt to sum up the
project achievements and research findings so far. As the project leader, the author gratefully acknowledges all the
cooperation and supports that the project received in various forms during the last five years.
        This article has been first published in Japanese as Yoshiyuki Tamura, Chitekizaisan Hi5seisakugaku no
Kokoromi, 20 Chitekizaisan Hoseisakugaku Kenkyu [hereinafter 'Intell. Prop. L. & Pol'y J.'] 1 (2008). In the course
of translation into English, the author and the translator removed some footnotes that cite Japanese sources. Please
