Held at the end of 1953, these elections are characteristic, inter alia, in that they were the first elections in which an economic body was elected as an equal house of Parliament. Besides, also the system of electing the political representative body (the Federal Council) underwent cer- tain considerable modifications in relation to the previous system, of 1950. As in earlier issues, we also present the text itself of the new electoral law. However, we have deemed it unnecessary to provide a translation of the entire text. That which ipossesses an impact of prin- ciple and which is relatively new in the Yugoslav electoral system is being presented integrally, such as Chapter I, dealing with the rights and duties of people's deputies, and Chapter II, which includes the general provisions on the election and recall of people's deputies. From the rest of the Law have been omitted all the technical and formal provisions which, although of significance to the practical implemen- tation of the electoral system itself, are more or less inherent in all electoral laws. At the same time we have retained all those provisions which are of some importance to the implementation of the basic prin- ciples of the Law or for a knowledge of its new premises and institu- tions. Due to the described character of the provisions of the electo- ral law which we have omitted, we have not considered it as necessary to present them in an abridged form, either. The Law on the Legal Status of Religious Communities, which was enacted in 1953, has aroused considerable interest also abroad. Although this Law represents an elaboration of the already established principles of the Yugoslav Constitutoin of 1946 and basically corre- sponds to. the already classical regimen of relationships between the State and the Church as practiced by the ccuntries in which the Church had been separated from the State, we still believe that this Law brings individual new and characteristic provisions concerning the status and place of the religious communities in a lay socialistic democratic republic.
