Moore*** Abstract As the world ushers in the next technology revolution, which many believe will be based on nanotechnology and molecular manufacturing, countries and regions are increasingly investing in nanotechnology research and development, and into protecting their innovations through intellectual property. This article offers a review of the 2012 Nanotechnology Patent Literature, including analysis by country, region and technology sector, which illustrates the continued growth of nanotechnology innovation and leadership by the United States. Further, the technology sector analysis shows materials and computers continue to rise rapidly while the energy sector is growing steadily. I. Introduction Starting with the Industrial Revolution, modern history can be divided into several periods of technological revolutions that developed in different regions throughout the world and which, interestingly, correspond to the regions of global power for the given time period. Technology revolutions generally follow a similar trajectory, from gestation to exploration, which is typically marked by core innovations.' See Figure 1. * Carey C.
