EDITORIAL
S we take our seat in the Editorial
chair at this the commencement of
a new session, and, looking back
along a lane of memories, recall to
mind the sessions which are past and
gone, we cannot fai! to be struck with the good
fortune which has ever been the Society's in its
choice of officers. No matter whether the
member appointed to one or other of the various
positions, which each October have to be filled,
has not previously been over-prominent in the
Society's eye; no matter whether he has or has
not given promise of pre-eminence in debate; no
matter whether his capacity for-organisation is to
a certain extent an unknown quantity, he invari-
ably responds to the demands made upon him
and invariably does his best to make the
particular session in which he is in office a success-
ful and a satisfactory one.
Remembering these things, we commence a new
volume of the Manchester Law Students' Magazine
with the liveliest anticipation that its future
numbers will have to chronicle the progress of a
session 'which will not fail to emulate its pre-
decessors.
Each October, since it was embarked upon
the sea of literature, the Magazine has
had to record the success of the session
which has terminated its course immediately
prior to its publication. The session that is
past has been as gratifying as its fellows. True,
there has been a trifling decrease in the attend-
ance at meetings, but this has been adequately
compensated for by a more than countervailing
increase in the average number of speakers

and in the strength of membership. True, the
dinner and the whist drive did not induce so many
to join in their revelry as the functions of the
previous year; but then there was the dance!
Many have been the discussions as to the
feasibility of a dance, and many the attempts
to give the project concrete form. But it is the
session that is just past that has seen these discus-
sions result in something more than airy nothing
-has seen the fruition of the seed which has
taken so long to germinate. It has been urged as
a defect of the Society's organisation that it has
not hitherto sufficiently adapted itself to the social
side of its members' requirements. This defect
can hardly be argued again. We, for our part,
desire to see a continuation of the Society's dance
and the Society's whist drive, and hope to see the
introduction of further social events, the value of
which cannot be over-estimated, into the Society's
programme.
It will be observed that this issue of the Maga-
zine is more or less a publication of reports.
This, of course, cannot be helped. It is with the
feeling that they might possibly begin to pall
that we have dared to shorten the reports of the
eighth and ninth ordinary meetings by leaving
out details of individual members' speeches. If
this should cause some heartburnings, we now
apologise, and hasten to assure members and
future members that the coming meetings of the
session will be dealt with in the customary and
well-established manner.
We conclude our Editorial remarks by urging
ordinary members to be regular in their attend-
ance at debates, and to lose no opportunity of
getting on their feet. The training which one
obtains in the debates, we can say from experi-
ence, is of the utmost value in future professional
