EDITORIAL.

TWELVE months ago, when the
financial resources of the Society
were anything but encouraging,
the Machester Law Students' Chronicle
was in grave danger of extinction.
Fortunately, that danger was averted,
and it was decided that a small monthly
paper should be substituted temporarily
for the more elaborate publication of
former years If the general consensus
. of opinion be adopted, the experiment
was justified.
To-day the position is changed.
Under the magic influence of a thought-
ful Treasurer, and the strenuous efforts
of a Committee of which the Society
may well be proud, the financial posi-
tion of the Society has improved con-
siderably. The time, however, has not
yet come when we can be lavish in our
expenditure. If progress is tb be
ensured we must move slowly and
cautiously. A magazine of some sort
is admittedly an absolute .necessity.
But it must not be allowed to develop
into a luxury. For one more session
at least, therefore, the Chronicle must
continue in its present form.
There is one point, however, which
calls for serious attention. The duty
of the Editors should be to collect and

co-ordinate material, to reject what is
unsuitable, and to see the rest safely
through the Press. Yet our experience
of last session seems to indicate that
they are expected to rely solely on the
officers of the Society for reports of the
various activities, and then to produce
a complete magazine without the aid of
any literary contributions at all. This
is hardly satisfactory. It should not be
necessary for the Editors to have to
appeal continually for contributions,
and it is hoped that the new session will
mark a change in this respect.
.It is desirable that the attention of
our members should be drawn, through
the medium of the editorial columns,
to a difficulty in administration which
is troubling the Committee. There are
many honorary members who are both
willing and anxious to keep in touch
with the Society, who are very lax in
the matter of paying their subscrip-
tions. We appeal to such members to
give their support, and to see that the
Treasurer and those working with him
are not continually having to worry
about ways and means.
In conclusion, we ask our members
not to forget the social side of the
Society's welfare. Particulars as to the
hot-pot supper and the annual dance
will be found in the following pages.
