Changes in the editorial team

The attentive reader of Medicine, Health Care and
Philosophy will have noticed that the cover of the
journal is different from earlier issues. From the
eighth volume on the editorial team of Medicine,
Health Care and Philosophy has changed. The reason
is that Henk ten Have has officially retired from his
editorial task because of his new position as Director
of the Division of Ethics of Science and Technology
of UNESCO in Paris. Henk ten Have was one of the
co-founders and the first secretary of the European
Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Health Care
(ESPMH), of which Medicine, Health Care and
Philosophy is the official journal. Henk ten Have
was also the first editor-in-chief of this journal.
Since the start of the journal in 1998, we have
served as managing editor and book review editor,
respectively. As new editors-in-chief, we had the
feeling that we should broaden the membership of the
editorial team from the very start. This is not only a
matter of spreading the workload, but most of all
broadening the editorial expertise. It is, therefore,
with pleasure that we can introduce two new asso-
ciate editors. Pekka Louhiala from Helsinki (Fin-
land) and Fredrik Svenaeus from Linkdping
(Sweden) will assist us in our editorial tasks. More-
over, Nikola Biller-Andorno from Berlin (Germany)
is prepared to serve as the new book review editor.
Finally, Valesca Hulsman and Danielle Verhaar will
assist us as editorial assistant and editorial secretary,
respectively.
This change of editorship was a good opportunity
to reconsider the membership of the Editorial Board
and the Advisory Board. Some members of these
boards had already announced that they wanted to
stop their activities for the journal. Upon inquiry, it
appeared that for various reasons a few other people
wanted to retire as well from their tasks as a member
of one of these boards. Since the start of the journal,
the members of the two boards did in fact the same
work, that is, advising the editors by reviewing
papers. Therefore, we decided to merge the two
boards into one new Editorial Board. Finally, a
scientific journal cannot exist without the coopera-

tion of many scientists and scholars with a wide
variety of specific expertise. Current developments in
medicine and health care, for example the rapid
development of new medical technologies, made it
also desirable to broaden the editorial expertise of
Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy. We have
therefore invited a number of scholars in the field of
medical ethics and medical philosophy to join the
Editorial Board. The aims and scope of the journal
will, however, not be changed. Medicine, Health Care
and Philosophy is a forum for international exchange
of research data, theories, reports and opinions in the
discipline of bioethics, and the philosophy of medi-
cine and health care in general. The aim of the journal
is to promote interdisciplinary studies, as well as to
stimulate international exchange. Particular attention
will be paid to contributions from European coun-
tries. But, as the ESPMH has many members from
outside Europe, we also welcome scientific contribu-
tions from non-European countries.
Our striving for the highest possible quality will
also remain unchanged. Over the years, Medicine,
Health Care and Philosophy has developed towards a
high quality journal in the field of medical ethics and
medical philosophy. Our intention is to at least
maintain the quality standard of the journal and to
improve it as much as possible. We strive for being
listed in current indexes of scientific journals, for
example the Social Science Citation Index. Moreover,
we will explore the possibility of being published as a
quarterly, that is, four times a year.
During the meeting of the ESPMH in August
2004, the board and members of the ESMPH
expressed their gratitude towards Henk ten Have
for all his efforts as editor-in-chief during the last
seven years. On behalf of the readers of the journal,
we again thank Henk ten Have for all his work for
the journal. We wish him all the best in his new
position at UNESCO.
