In 2011 we celebrated the centenary of our founding as the Massachusetts Society of Examining Physicians. This year we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the re-chartering of our organization in 1972 as the American Society of Law & Medicine, and with this commemora- tive edition, we bring you the first issue of the 40th volume of the Journal ofLaw, Medicine & Ethics. We hope you enjoy the very spe- cial retrospective cover we created for this issue, and also hope you check out many of the special events we have planned for this year. The Journal ofLaw, Medicine & Ethics has a rich and vibrant history - one that is intrinsically intertwined wxith the multidis- ciplinary fields that it explores. It began as a modest eight-page newsletter called Medicolegal News, but its size masked the fact that important articles were already being published in its pages. As the publication's size and stature grew, both the title and format changed, and Medicolegal News became Law, Medicine & Health Care. It was in Law, Medicine & Health Care that the Journal first began experimenting xith the format of symposium publishing - a format that the Journal continues to be so well-known for today. In the 1980s, the Journal's parent organization added the word eth- ics to it name, and thus ASLME's flagship journal became the pub- lication we now know as the Journal ofLaw, Medicine & Ethics. In 2004, the Journal was redesigned into its current, reader-friendly format. I speak from the heart when I tell you that the editorial staff here at JLME is proud and honored to be the current caretakers of this esteemed publication. What is most revealing about these kinds of big anniversaries, however, is that they simply would not be possible without our incredibly loyal members, subscribers, authors, and peer reviewers. Thank you to everyone who reads and contributes to JLME. We hope you enjoy this issue, which, fittingly, contains a symposium by a long-time friend, Robert Sade, The Graying of America: Chal- lenges and Controversies. In keeping with our celebratory spirit, we invite you to read the special article I am writing about the history of JLME, which will be published later this year, and participate in a birthday celebration for ASLME that will be held this year at the Health Law Professors conference at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. We will also post more exciting information in our newsletter, the ASLME Insider, and on our website wmy.aslme.org. Again, thank you for taking this jour- ney xith us.
