                            EDITORIAL

CONSIDERABLE new legislation of medico-legal interest is now being contemplated
and implemented by Her Majesty's Government. This includes such matters as
driving and alcoholic intake; abortion and homosexuality, whilst in addition there
is the Criminal Justices Bill, which may well give rise to a new conception of the
presentation of scientific and medical evidence by Certificate.
The British Academy of Forensic Sciences agreed to set up a Joint Committee
with the Law Society to consider what aspects of criminal law are in need of
reform in the light of present-day scientific and medical knowledge and to inquire
and report thereon. The Committee first considered the law in relation to thera.
peutic abortion and devoted a great deal of time and care in its deliberations and
report which is published below. Reports of several other bodies have also been
published, including the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the
British Medical Association. It is, therefore, some indication of the justification of
the work of the Joint Committee that several favourable comments have been
expressed on its Report, including that of Lord Brock (The Times, February 3,
1967) which is quoted in part:
Happily, the proposals in the memorandum of the joint committee of the
Law Society and of the British Academy of Forensic Science just published
introduce a more rational note than do many other proposals.
Thus, the Academy, by reason of its representation of Medicine, Science and
the Law, is with The Law Society offering a contribution towards the formulation
of future policy. It is hoped that these joint deliberations will continue in the
future to contribute in other fields in which the disciplines have common interests.
The Eighth Annual Scientific Meeting to be held on July 21 and 22 will devote
its programme to the problems of the Hazards of Modem Life.
