handle is hein.journals/mdsclw46 and id is 1 raw text is: Sir Barry Jackson 1 Sir Barry Jackson, MS FRCS FRCP, President of the Academy 2005-2007 Having qualified from medical school at West- minster Hospital, Sir Barry Jackson later became a consultant surgeon at St Thomas' Hospital, London, where for thirty years he specialised in surgery of the gastrointestinal tract. He retired from this position in 2001 but continues to be busy in numerous non-clinical activities. He is currently President of the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund and the Medical Artists' Association of Great Britain as well as President of BAFS. In the past he has been President of The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, The Royal College of Surgeons of England and The Royal Society of Medicine. For ten years he was Serjeant-Surgeon to The Queen. He is the recipient of a number of Honorary Fellowships and degrees. He was knighted in 2001 for services to training and education in surgery. In the fields of special interest to BAFS members, he is widely experienced as an expert medical witness having given many opinions in cases of alleged medical negligence in surgical practice. He has many years experience both as a panelist and as a chairman of Fitness to Practise committees of the General Medical Council, an activity which continues. His non professional interests include opera, medical history and antiquarian book collect- ing. He also collects contemporary fine printing and has written articles on this subject. Married to Sheila for forty-three years, and with three children and four grandchildren, he is told that there is something called retirement but has not experienced it yet!
