Professor Sir Colin Berry, President of the Academy 2003-2005


After qualifying and undergoing training in
pathology at Charing Cross Hospital, where he
won  the Governors' Clinical Gold Medal, Sir
Colin became Lecturer at the Institute of Child
Health, Great Ormond  Street and was there
for six years, becoming  a  British Heart
Foundation research fellow. He was appointed
Reader in pathology at Guy's Hospital in 1970
and Professor and Head of the Department of
Morbid Anatomy at the Royal London Hospital
in 1976 - retiring in 2002.

His interest in toxicology led to him serving as
a member,  and ultimately Chairman, of the
Committee on Dental and Surgical Materials,
also as a member  of the Committee on the
Safety of Medicines and as a member  of a
number  of other related committees of the
European  Commission. He was a member  of
the Scientific Sub-Committee on Pesticides of
Great  Britain, then its Chairman, and  a
member,  and subsequently Chairman, of the
Advisory Committee on  Pesticides, in which


post he advised on scientific issues relating to
pesticides for six Government departments.
He  has recently served as a member of the
radical review of the Coroner Services.

For more  than 20 years Sir Colin was the
editor of Virchows Archiv, the oldest of histo-
pathology journals, and has  served on  a
number  of other editorial boards. He has
examined  in 22 universities in the UK and
overseas and is a former President of the
European  Society of Pathology. He is the
current Master of the Worshipful Society of
Apothecaries of London.

Sir Colin is a former member of the Medical
Research Council of Great Britain. He was
elected to the German Academy  of Sciences
(Deutsche  Akademie   der  Natureforscher
Leopoldina) in 1993  and  made  a  Knight
Bachelor in the Queen's Birthday Honours
List in the same year, for services to medicine
and science.
